Anne Arundel County Fire Fighter Memorial

January is Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month. Fire Fighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service. In 2019, more than 75% of the names of Fire Fighters added to the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Wall of Honor in Colorado Springs, Colorado, were of members who died from occupational cancer.

A young lady in our community, Kyra Fallon-Skinner of Troop 160G wanted to make sure that here in Anne Arundel County, we had a memorial garden closer to home to honor and remember our fallen.  She completed this endeavor as her Eagle Scout project late last year, and it is located at the County Fire Department Headquarters in Millersville.  

Kyra said she chose the project because, “the Line of Duty Death Memorial Garden is a project the county has wanted for a while but never really had the means, time and funding to do. You all are busy people! So when I heard about honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, I couldn't think of a better project to take on.” Well, we certainly appreciate your efforts and support, Kyra! 

After high school graduation, Kyra hopes to attend the Air Force or Naval Academy and serve her country, and is interested in a career in cyber intelligence or medicine.  We can’t wait to see what her future has in store! Thank you, Kyra, for creating a space where we can reflect on our lost Brothers and Sisters in our own backyard.
