Winter Car Emergency Kits

January is known to bring inclement weather and icy roads to Anne Arundel County, and driving in a snow or ice storm can be stressful and often dangerous! 

We sat down with Anne Arundel County Professional Fire Fighter Charles Fowler to discuss what items you should always keep in your trunk’s emergency kit ensuring you and your loved ones stay as safe as possible:

1. A fully charged cell phone so you can call for help. Most newer cars come with a charging port, so make sure you have a charging cable in your car. If your car doesn’t have a charging port, you can use a USB adapter that plugs into the power port (formerly a cigarette lighter). You can also buy a portable backup battery that you can keep charged. 

2. A shovel can help clear snow from around your car, and you can find foldable shovels that fit in your trunk or emergency kit. 

3. An ice scraper and broom will help clear ice or snow off your windows.  

4. A plastic orange safety triangle will keep you safe in your vehicle and makes sure you’re seen by other drivers. 

5. Jumper cables are a great addition to your vehicle’s emergency kit, no matter what time of year!  

6. A flashlight with extra batteries. A flashlight is invaluable if your car lights are out or if you need to walk in the dark to get help.

7. A set of sturdy, warm work gloves. You may need to shovel or clear windows in snow or sleet.

8. Basic safety/comfort items, which may include:

A blanket, water, bagged snack items, first aid kit, extra layer of clothing (sweatshirt), a pair of socks, and a raincoat or poncho.
